The 2024 Xiamen Diamond League Meet took place at the Xiamen Egret Stadium, China, on Saturday, April 20. This was the first of fourteen Diamond League stops, and covered a total of fifteen track and field events for male and female. The meet was highlighted by Armand Duplantis 6.24m world record performance in the men’s pole vault. Marco Arop (Canada), Daniel Roberts (USA), Gudaf Tsegay (Ethiopia) and Beatrice Chepkoech (Kenya) all posted world leading performances, while Shelby McEwen (USA), Pedro Pichardo (Puerto Rico), and Torrie Lewis (Australia) were among several athletes who established meet records. China’s Dezhu Liu set a national record in the men’s 800m race running a time of 1:45.66 to finished in ninth place. Selected races are detailed below.
Men’s Pole Vault Final
Armand Duplantis of Sweden won the men’s pole vault final in a World Record of 6.24m, while Sam Kendricks of the USA was second with 5.82m and Bokai Huang of China was third with a clearance height of 5.72m. The field was rounded-out by Austin Miller of the USA with 5.62m, Tao Zhong of China with 5.62m, Ben Broeders of Belgium with 5.42m, Christopher Nilsen of the USA with 5.42m and Jacob Wooten of the USA with 5.42m. Lita Baehre Bo Kanda of Germany and Jie Yao of China did not register a mark.
Men’s 800m Final
Marco Arop of Canada won the men’s 800m final in a World Lead of 1:43.61, while Wyclife Kinyamal of Kenya was second in a Season Best of 1:43.66 and Tshepiso Masalela of Botswana was third in a Personal Best of 1:43.88. The field was rounded-out by Alex Ngeno Kipngetich of Kenya in 1:44.76, Andreas Kramer of Switzerland in a Season Best pf 1:44.81, Elias Ngeny of Kenya in 1:45.37, Clayton Murphy of the USA in a Season Best of 1:45.38, Abdelati El Guesse of Morocco in 1:45.65, Liu Dezhu of China in a National Record of 1:45.66, Ethan Hussey of Great Britain in a Season Best of 1:46.20, Peter Bol of Australia in 1:47.02 and Mark English of Ireland in 1:47.14. Men’s 5000m Final
Girma Lamecha of Ethiopia won the men’s 5000m in 12:58.96, while Nicholas Kipkorir of Kenya was second in 12:59.78 and Birhanu Balew of Brunei was third in 13:00.47. Men’s Triple Jump Final
Pedro Pichardo of Portugal won the men’s triple jump final, cutting the sands in 17.51m (+0.6), while Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso was second in 17.12m (+0.3) and Wen Su of China was third in 16.82m (+0.1). The field was rounded-out by Yaoqing Fang of China in 16.73m (0.0), Yaming Ahu of China in 16.46m (-0.3), Tiago Pereira of Portugal in 16.41m (-0.2), Addulla Narangolintevida of India in 16.33m (0.7), Donald Scott of the USA in 16.02m (-0.5) and Max Heb of Germany in 16.02m (-0.6).
Men’s High Jump Final
Shelby McEwen of the USA jumped 2.27m, to win the men’s high jump final, to beat Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar on the count back, while Hamish Kerr of New Zealand was third, clearing 2.24m. The field was rounded-out by Joel Baden of Australia in 2.24m, Zhen Wang of China in a Season Best of 2.24m, Christoff Bryan of Jamaica in 2.20m, Luis Riverra Castro of Puerto Rico in 2.15m and Vernon Turner of the USA in 2.15m. Thomas Carmoy of Belgium did not register a mark.
Men’s 100m Final – Wind: -0.6
Christian Coleman of the USA posted a Season Best of 10.13, to win the men’s 100m final, while his countryman Fred Kerley was second in 10.17 and Ackeem Blake of Jamaica was third in a Season Best of 10.20. The field was rounded-out by Rohan Watson of Jamaica in a Season Best of 10.27, Ryo Wada of Japan in 10.31, Ronnie Baker of the USA in a Season Best of 10.33, Yoshihide of Japan in a Season Best of 10.38, Brandon Carnes of the USA in 10.40, Yohan Blake of Jamaica in a Season Best of 10.43 and Deng Xinrui of China in 10.55.
Men’s 110m Hurdles Final – Wind: -0.3
Daniel Roberts of the USA stopped the clock in 13.12, to win the men’s 110m hurdles, while his countryman Cordell Tinch was second in 13.16 and Shunsuke Izumiya of Japan was third in 13.17. The field was rounded-out by Freddie Crittenden of the USA in 13.30, Eric Edwards of the USA in 13.31, Hansle Parchment of Jamaica in 13.33, Junxi Liu of China in 13.28, Orlando Bennett of Jamaica in 13.58 and Jamal Britt of the USA in 13.88.
Women’s 200m Final – Wind: -0.4
The Australian Torrie Lewis sprang a surprise on the American Sha’Carri Richardsson, to win the women’s 200m final in 22.96. The highly fancied Richardson was relegated to second place, posting 22.99, while her team-mate Tamara Clark was third in 23.01. The field was rounded-out by Anavia Battle of the USA, in 23.02, Twanisha Terry of the USA in 23.25, Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland in 23.39, Jessica-Bianca Wessolly of Germany in 23.65, Caisia Chandler of the USA in 23.72 and Anthonique Strachan of the Bahamas in 24.21.
Women’s 400m Final
Marileidy Paulino of Dominica stopped the clock in 50.08, to win the women’s 400m final, while Natalia Kaczmarek of Poland was second in 50.29 and Britton Wilson of the USA was third in 51.26. The field was rounded out by Sada Williams of Barbados in 51.97, Ellie Beer of Australia in 52.36, Kaylin Whitney of the USA in 52.47, Aliyah Abrams of Guyana in 52.69, Evelis Aguilar of Colombia in 52.97 and Floria Guei of France in 53.65.
Women’s 100m Hurdles Final – Wind: -0.2
Jasmin Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico posted 12.45, to win the women’s 100m hurdles, while Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas was second in 12.49 and Cyrena Samba-Mayela of France was third in 12.54. Women’s Shot Put Final
Lijiao Gong of China won the women’s shot put final with a throw of 19.72m, while Maddison-Lee Wesche of New Zealand was second with 19.63m and Chase Jackson of the USA was third with 19.62m. Women’s Discus Throw Final
Valarie Allman of the USA threw 69.80m to win the women’s discus final, while Yaime Perez of Cuba was second throwing 68.83m and Bin Feng of China was third with 67.07m.
