Kingston College (KC) and Excelsior High School retained their respective boy’s and girl’s titles for the Corporate Area Championship that was held over two days on March 3 and 4 at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. Interestingly, Kingston College and Excelsior High School won their respective Corporate Area boy’s and girl’s titles for the fifth and seventh consecutive times, respectively.
Notwithstanding injuries suffered by quite a few athletes, Kingston College was able to defend with 427 points, to top Calabar High and Jamaica College that finished on 415 points and 389.5 points, respectively. The other schools to complete the top ten on the boy’s side, were: Wolmers Boys (121 points), Excelsior High School (106 points), St. Georges College (79.5 points), Camperdown High School (55 points), Campion College (29 points), Ardenne High (15 points) and Holy Trinity High (10 points).
On the girl’s side, Excelsior scored 403 points, to finish well clear of Wolmers Girls’ School and Immaculate High School that scored 310 points and 280 points, respectively. Excelsior has literally had a stranglehold on Corporate Area Championship on the girl’s side. The other schools to complete the top ten on the girl’s side, were: Queen’s School (193.5 points), Alpha (120.5 points), Camperdown (118 points), St. Andrew High School (60.5 points), Holy Childhood (48 points), Campion College (33.5 points) and St Hughs (33 points).
Kingston College 427 points was a reduction on the 503.7 points that they amassed in 2022, and was due mainly to points conceded as a result of injuries, as also, improved competition from its archrivals in Calabar and Jamaica College. This year, Calabar relegated Jamaica College, to third place, as they claimed the number two spot behind perennial winners, Kingston College.
Special highlights - Boys:
100m
Bouwahjgie Nkrumie of Kingston College won the 100m in an easy 10.32, -1.3 wind. Former Kingston College 400m Hurdler, Jaden Reid, who now represents Jamaica College, was second in 10.51, while Jason Lewis of Camperdown High, was third in 10.77. Nicolas Francis of Kingston College also contributed five points in the class one 100m, with his fourth-place finish. The Class four 100m was won by Orandy Campbell of Kingston College in 12.10.
Shaquane Gordon of Calabar High won the class two 100m title in a personal best 10.92, while Malique Dennis of Jamaica College secured victory in class three 100m, in a time of 11.39.
Across all 100m finals, KC scored a massive thirty-two points, to outperform its nearest rivals.
200m
Nickoy Drummond of Camperdown won the boy’s class one 200m title in 21.60. Jehlani Gordon of Wolmer’s was second in a personal best of 21.64, while Emmanuel Rwotomiya was third in 21.79. The wind speed was -4.1. Event favourite, Adrian Kerr, prematurely stopped due to what appeared to have been a hamstring niggle.
The boy’s class two 200m was won by Calabar’s Khamani Gordon in 22.03, ahead of Omary Robinson of Jamaica College, who posted 23.18 for second. Donte Johnson of Calabar secured third place in 23.26. The wind speed was -4.1.
Calabar’s Byron Walker won the class three title in 23.19, ahead of Jamaica College’s Malique Dennis and Kingston College’s Eshanee Porter, who posted 23.47 and 23.85 for second and third, respectively. The wind speed was -3.5.
400m
In the boy’s class one 400m, Amal Glasgow and Marcinho Rose of Kingston College posted season’s best times of 47.27 and 48.58 for first and third, respectively. Malique Smith-Band of Jamaica College was second in 47.58.
Tahj-Marques White of Kingston College captured the class two title in 48.82, while Nickecoy Bramwell of Calabar was second in 50.06, and Ainsley McGregor of Wolmer’s Boy was third in a Season’s Best of 50.42.
Jordon Rehedul of Kingston College posted a Season’s Best of 50.39, to win the class three title, while Christopher Ellis and Malik Gayle of Calabar was second and third in 51.97 and 53.70, respectively.
Marko Callaghan of Jamaica College won the class four title in 52.12, while Diwayne Sharpe and Enaharoo Lewis of Kingston College were second and third in times of 53.38 and 53.51SB, respectively.
800m
The boy’s 800m class one title was won by Kewarny Fletcher of Calabar in a Personal Best of 1:53:83, while the Kingston College pair of Ainsley Campbell and Schevorn Wardlow were second and third in times of 1:55:05 and 1:56:34, respectively.
Rasheed Pryce of Jamaica College won the class two title in 1:59:81, while the Kingston College pair of Rekelme Hunter and Nahashon Ruto were second and third in 2:00:41 and 201:12, respectively.
Calabar had a 1-2 finish in the boy’s class three in Carlos Brown and Javel Watson, who posted 2:03:39 and 2:08:21, respectively. Christopher Anderson of Kingston College was third in 2:09:19.
1500m
Christopher Anderson of Kingston College secured the class three 1500m tittle, winning in a time of 4:45:62, while Yohance Carty of Jamaica College was second in 4:48:98, and Jelami Brown, also of KC, was third in 4:50:32.
Brian Kiprop’s 4:13:60 and Nahashon Ruto’s 4:13:93, gave Kingston College the quinella in the class two 1500m.
Jamaica College secured victory in the class one 1500m through Nichalas Power, who won in 4:01:82, ahead of KC’s Ethan Gioko and Calabar’s Kewarny Fletcher, who stopped the clock in 4:05:30 and 4:14:23, respectively.
4 x 100m Relays
Jamaica College won the class one 4 x 100m relay final in 40.59, ahead of Camperdown and Wolmer’s High that stopped the clock in 40.72 and 41.43, respectively. Kingston College that won at the Gibson-McCook Relays in a season’s best of 40.14, did not finish the event due to a fumble with the baton on the second exchange. Jamaica College also won the class four 4 x 100m relay final in 46.63, ahead of Kingston College and Calabar that stopped the clock in 47.03 and 47.82, respectively.
Calabar won the class two 4 x 100m relay final in 41.46, ahead of Jamaica College and Kingston College that posted 41.95 and 43.16, respectively.
Kingston College secured the title for the class three 4 x 100 in 44.05, ahead of Calabar and Wolmer’s that stopped the clock in 44.31 and 45.29, respectively.
4 x 400m Relays
Kingston College won the 4 x 400m open final in 3:12:65, ahead of Jamaica College and Calabar that stopped the clock in 3:15:15 and 3:17:65, for second and third, respectively.
1600 Medley Relays and other field events
Kingston College secured victories in the 2000m steeplechase through Ainsley Campbell, Ryan Johnson in the class one high jump, Daijon Budhai in the class two discuss throw and Amani Phillips in the class three long jump.
Special Highlights - Girls:
100m
Kayla Johnson of Immaculate High won the class four 100m final in a time of 12.83, while Natrece East of Wolmer’s easily won the class three 100m title in 12.86, ahead of her teammate, Tiana Marshall, who clocked 13.07 for second.
Canelia Hope of Camperdown won the class two 100m title in 12.36, while Mickay Gardener of Wolmer’s won the class one 100m title in 11.95. Essence Burdbridge of Immaculate High was second in 12.48, while Excelsior’s Mikela Coombs was third in 12.53.
200m
The class one girl’s 200m title was won by Mickayla Gardener of Wolmer’s in a time of 24.69. Diandra Kelly and Mikela Coombs of Excelsior were second and third in 25.10n and 25.52, respectively.
Tricha Walker of Camperdown won the class two title in a Season’s Best of 26.01, while Amoi Kentish of Convent of Mercy Alpha and Shevi Anne Shim of Immaculate Conception were second and third in 26.12 and 26.42, respectively.
Natrece East of Wolmer’s posted a Season’s Best of 24.68, to capture the class three girl’s title, while Breana Brown and Janelia Williams of Excelsior were second and third in times of 25.11 and 25.22, respectively.
Naje Brown of Immaculate won the class four title in 27.27, while Mona-Lee McHugh of Wolmer’s was second in 27.83 and Sheneil Stewart of Excelsior was third in 28.11.
400m
Diandra Kelley of Excelsior won the girl’s class one 400m title in Personal Best of 55.00. Tashsana Huie of Clan Carthy High was second in a Personal Best of 56.46, while Hannah Charles of Wolmer’s was third in a Personal Best of 57.92.
Mackeda Terry-Ann Ledgister of The Queen’s School captured the class two girl’s title in a Season’s Best of 59.36. Sharlla Whittaker of Excelsior was second in 1:00:02 and Davine Dickenson of Immaculate Conception High was third in 1:00:03.
Breana Brown and Janelia Williams of Excelsior High School were first and third in the class three girl’s 400m, posting times of 56.71 and 57.63, while Kimberly Wright of Immaculate Conception was second in 57.20.
Oracesia Brooks of Excelsior won the class four title in 1:03:09, while Abigayle N. Mills of Wolmer’s was second in 1:03:60, and Ashley Barrett of Immaculate was second in 1:04:05.
800m
Ashantae Jamelia Brown and Crystal Shanna-Kay Coke of The Queen’s School were first and second in the class one girl’s 800m, posting times of 2:29:61 and 2:30:53, respectively. Shaneequa Anderson of Excelsior High was third in 2:31:43.
Chris-Ann Edwards of St. Andrew High won the class two title in 2:28:48, while Daynea Rihanna Whittingham of The Queen’s School was second in 2:28:72 and Jenifer Byass of Camperdown High was third in 2:28:76.
Jadieann McKenzie and Shaneica Smith of The Queen’s School, were first and third in the girl’s class three event, posting times of 2:42:36 and 2:43:88, respectively. Amanda Bailey of Excelsior was second in 2:42:89.
1500m
Of the three 1500m finals, The Queen’s School was victorious in two. Shantay Powell clocked 5:35:68, to win the class three 1500m, while Ashante Brown clocked 5:15:45, to win the class one title.
Jennifer Byass of Camperdown High took the top honours in the class two 1500m in a time of 5:12:67.
4 x 100m Relays
Wolmer’s won the class one 4 x 100m relay final in 47.74, ahead of Excelsior High and Immaculate High that stopped the clock in 48.17 and 48.97, respectively. Class three and class four honours also went to Wolmer’s. In class three, Wolmer’s won the event in 47.63, while Excelsior High was second in 49.02, and Immaculate was third in 49.04. Wolmer’s won the class four in 50.94, while Excelsior and Alpha were second and third in 51.73 and 52.76, respectively.
Excelsior High School won the class two 4 x 100m relay final in 48.14. Camperdown High School was second in 48.34, while Alpha Academy was third in 48.65.
4 x 400m Relay
Wolmer’s won the 4 x 400m open final in 3:48:44, ahead of Excelsior High and The Queen’s School that stopped the clock in 3:49:07 and 4:01:60 for second and third, respectively.
1600m Medley
Papine High School won the girl’s 1600m medley in 4:24:88, while Camperdown High was second in 4:28:63 and Excelsior was third in 4:34:70
