The Moscow World Championship will be Drama-filled

During the 2013 World Championship to be held in Moscow, Russia from August 10-17, there will be numerous story lines and there sure will be drama. The World Championships in athletics comes around  every two years  Usain Bolt used the 2009 (Berlin) and 2011 (Daegu) World Championships to signal his dominance in the sport of track and field and there is no doubt that Bolt will again use the 2013 Moscow World Championship to build on his already legendary status. Amidst the recent flurries of doping violations committed by Tyson Gay (USA), Asafa Powell (Jamaica), Sherone Simpson (Jamaica) and to a lesser extent Veronica Campbell–Brown (Jamaica),  as a track fan, I am truly excited about the Moscow World Championship.  While the absence of Gay, Campbell–Brown and company is noticeable, there is now the opportunity for other stars (old and new) to shine on the world stage. The absence of Gay has opened the door for Wallace Spearmon Jr. to compete in the 200m and has thrust Justin Gatlin and Mike Rodgers in the leadership role for the USA men’s 4x100 relay team. While the recent doping violations had monopolized the headlines in recent weeks and with a cloud of suspicions hovering over the Jamaican team and the World Championship on a whole, a superb performance by Bolt in the 100m on day one could make the doping violation headlines dissipate at least temporarily. Sports fans are always intrigued by great story lines and drama and the 2013 World Championships will have its fair share. Despite the fact the much anticipated match-up between Bolt and Gay will not take place, track fans are paying keen attention to the effects of the absence of Gay on the USA team. The absence of Yohan Blake (Jamaica) and Ryan Bailey (USA) due to injury will be felt by both teams. And victory by either team in the men’s 4x100m relay, assuming that both teams get the baton around the track,  will lead to numerous “what if” scenarios. These scenarios along with the drama of who will be the next athlete caught doping, make for interesting television over the next several days.
