Sachin Dennis, one for the future

Coming hot on the heels of his 10.53 (seconds) performance against a negative 2.3 m/s windspeed at the 2021 edition of the ISSA Grace Kennedy Boy's and Girl's Championship (Champs), Sachin Dennis continues to impress. The 18-year-old from St. Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) lowered his previous personal best of 10.20 to 10.15 at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Destiny Challenge Meet that was held at the National Stadium on May 22, 2021.

Promising athlete

Dennis has indeed shown great promise earlier in his track and field career. At the tender age of 15 and competing as a class 2 (under-16) athlete, he ran an amazing 10.20 in the 100m, to showcase his sprinting prowess and stamped his dominance over his peers and rivals. Indeed, when Dennis ran 10.20 in 2018, only a handful of class 1 (under-19) boys had ever gone faster. These included national record-holder, Christopher Taylor (10.11) and Champs record-holder, Zharnell Hughes (10.12).  Subsequent to Dennis’s run, Oblique Seville, of Calabar, posted 10.13 in 2019.  In 2018, Dennis was faster than every school boy across all classes who participated at Champs as the class 1 100m champion, Calabar’s Tyreke Wilson, took the title in 10.21 seconds.

Early Years

Since his exploits in class 2, Sachin Dennis has suffered many serious setbacks that were occasioned by recurring injuries which caused him to miss out on two high school championships (2019 & 2020). Also, there were rumours that had surfaced that Dennis would not be running for STETHS nor in the national colours of Jamaica. These had generated much anger and anxiety from his adoring fans.  At the 2021 ISSA Boy's and Girl's Championship, those concerns were finally put to rest.

At the young age of 14 years, Dennis competed as a class 3 (under 14) athlete and ran 10.66 seconds in the 100m to highlight his prodigious talent. However, he did not run this time at the 2017 Champs.

To date, Dennis is among a handful of male sprinters at ISSA Boy's and Girl's Championship, to have won the 100m event at all three classes. Indeed, he has the fourth fastest time as a junior.

The future

Unquestionably, Dennis's 10.15 performance must be seen as an outstanding feat. And one can only wonder just how fast he will be able to go over the next few years. If Dennis remains injury-free and fully fit, it is quite conceivable that he could go sub-10 in this season. Had Dennis not suffered the injuries that he had some two years ago, just where would he be at this point?

The sky is the limit for this talented sprinter.
