Akheem Gauntlett Takes 400m National Title

Akheem Gauntlett ran a personal best time of 45.00 seconds to capture the men’s 400m tile at the 2014 JAAA Senior Trials held at the National Stadium, in Kingston on Sunday. The 24-year old Akheem entered the race with a previously best time of 45.13 seconds finished ahead of Rusheen McDonald (45.25), Hugh Graham Jr. (45.43) and Edino Steele (45.46). This is the first national title for Akheem who earlier this year, was a member of the Jamaican indoor 4x400m relay team that won bronze in Sopot, Poland in a national indoor record time of 3:04.69. Akheem is a member of the Jersey City /Brooklyn-based Zenith Velocity track club and is coached by Trevor Green. Coach Green’s initial reaction to Akheem’s performance was “Amazing, I’m so blessed, two countries, two champions”.  Coach Green is also the coach of Lalonde Gordon, the 400m Olympics bronze medalist who captured the 200m (20.38)  title at the Trinidad and Tobago  Championship on  June 22.
