Campbell-Brown Defends World Indoor 60m Title

“It is very important for me run a few 60m races indoor which will definitely prepare me for running the 100m outdoors,” said Jamaica’s sprinting sensation Veronica Campbell-Brown (VCB) during the earlier rounds of the 2012 world indoor championship. VCB went on to win the 2012 60m IAAF World Indoor title in a world-leading 7.01 seconds. VCB, who captured the 60m title in Doha in 2010 in a lifetime-best 7.00 seconds, has completed a superb 2012 indoor season that saw her winning the 50m (6.08 seconds) at the US Open in New York and finishing second to USA’s Tiana Madison in the 60m at the US Track Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In capturing the gold medal, VCB was the only Jamaican to stand atop the podium in Istanbul. Other medal winners from the Caribbean included Nesta Carter (Jamaica) who was second in the men’s 60m in 6.54 seconds behind USA Justin Gatlin 6.46 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago’s veteran Marc Burns was fifth in 6.62 seconds Costa Rican Brenes Takes 400m Title Bahamians Demetrius Pinder (45.34 seconds) and Chris Brown (45.90 seconds) finished 2^nd and 3^rd in the 400m behind the Pan-American 400m champion Nery Brenes (45.11) of Costa Rica. Brenes, who has a personal best of 44.65 seconds in the outdoor 400m, was ecstatic about his victory and expressed his satisfaction in defeating both the defending world indoor champion Chris Brown and the reigning 2011 400m world champion Grenadian Kirani James, who was given the lane of death, Lane 1. Relays Trinidad and Tobago‘s (T&T) only medal at the championship came in the men’s 4x400m relay where they took the bronze medal in a national record time of 3.06.85 behind winner, the USA team 3.03.94 and the Great Britain team (3.04.72). The T&T quartet of Lalonde Gordon, Renny Quow, Jareem Richards and Jarrin Solomon ran a gutsy race to come from behind to beat out the Russian team for the bronze. The Bahamian 4x400 team had a disappointing world championship by failing to qualify for the final which is reminiscent of what happened to them at the 2011 Daegu world championship.
