Calvert, Hyman, Bailey-Cole Shine at Madrid World Challenge

Twenty-three year old Schillonie Calvert ran a strong race to win the women’s 200m in a time of 22.68 seconds at the 2012 IAAF Madrid World Challenge yesterday. Calvert finished ahead of fellow-Jamaican Anneshia McLaughlin (22.70) and St Kitts and Nevis’s Tameka Williams (22.85).  Calvert who has a personal best 22.55 seconds in the 200m, had made the finals in the 200m at the recently concluded Jamaican Olympic Trials but did not compete. Calvert victory can be viewed as redemption of sorts and signal that she is in fine form. McLaughlin just missed out on making the Jamaican team in the 200m by finishing 4^th at the Jamaican Trails in a time of 22.61 seconds. Hyman and Bailey-Cole join the sub-10 100m club Cayman Island’s Kemar Hyman took the men’s 100m title in a personal best and new national record time of 9.95 seconds (+1.8w/s) ahead of Jamaica’s Kemar Bailey-Cole (9.98) and Trinidad’s Marc Burns (10.08).  Hyman got a great start and ran a control race to finish ahead of the field. Hyman, a senior at the Florida State University has just completed a successful 2012 collegiate season that culminated with All-American honors. Kemar Bailey-Cole became the latest Jamaican to join the sub-10 club by virtue of his 2^nd place finished behind Hyman, in a personal best time of 9.98 seconds. Bailey –Cole who finished in 5^th place in the 100m at the 2012 Jamaican Trials in 10.00 seconds, behind winner Yohan Blake (9.75), has been in fine form recently and could possibly be a member of the Jamaican 4x1 relay pool to London. Twenty year old Bailey-Cole is a member of the Racers Track Club and is coached by Glenn Mills. Williams and Gonzales American Debbie Dunn took the women’s 400m title in 50.83 seconds ahead of Jamaican Shericka Williams (51.10) while Belgium Kevin Borlee took men’s equivalent in 45.09 seconds. Jamaican Jermaine Gonzales faced the starter in the men’s 400m but did not finish the race.
