Sanchez, Santos Shines for the Dominican Republic

Today, Felix Sanchez and Luguelin Santos delivered outstanding performances on the track at the London Olympics to secured gold and silver medals for the Dominican Republic.  The 35-year-old Sanchez won the men’s 400m hurdles in a season best 47.63 seconds ahead of the fast-finishing American Michael Tinsley (47.91) and Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson (48.10). Great Britain’s David Green finished 4^th in 48.24 seconds. Sanchez is now a double Olympic gold medal winner having won the 400m hurdles at the 2004 Athens Olympics.  Sanchez who had a very challenging 2012 season and hit his lowest point at the Rome Diamond League meet on May 31 when he crashed into a hurdle and was wiped-out, was able to put together a dominant performance to claim the title.  After the race, an emotional Sanchez jumped and screamed for joy. Luguelin Santos Eighteen year old Luguelin Santos who so far had a busy and productive season was able to garner the silver medal in the mean’s 400m in a time of 44.46 seconds. Santos finished behind winner Kirani James (43.94) and ahead of LaLonde Gordon (44.52). Santos is having a superb 2012 season in which he logged several sub-45 performances. Santos now adds his Olympic silver medal to the World Junior gold medal that he won several weeks ago in Barcelona.
