“Things are a little slow due to the cold weather, but I am looking forward to the warm weather and the start of the season,” said Olympic bronze medalist Lalonde Gordon. The Trinidad native under the guidance of Coach Trevor Green will start his 2013 campaign this weekend when he competes in the 200m at the Florida Relays. Gordon, the double Olympic bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics Games has concluded a very successful indoor campaign that saw him establishing season best in the 200m (20.61), 300m (32.48) and 400m (46.73). Gordon started the indoor season as one of the hottest sprinter on the planet but tapered off during the latter part of the season.
Training and Preparation
“Training is going good, we have changed a few things but so far it’s going good,” said Gordon who found the indoor 400m to be very challenging due to his height and that the travel to England during the latter part of the indoor season took a toll on his body. A now relaxed and confident Gordon has made it clear that his goal for this season is to go sub-44 seconds in the 400m and to stand atop the podium at the World Championship this summer. “I am looking to doing better this year than I did last year,” he said. By the end of the 2013 season, the Trinidad national 400m record of 44.21 seconds set by Ian Morris back in 1992 could be history.
How has Life Changed for Gordon?
When ask how his life has changed, Gordon pointed out that fans will acknowledge him when he walks the street of Trinidad and Tobago, but fan in the United States don’t really acknowledge or recognized him except when he is at track meets. However, that could change immensely this season if the 24-year-old Brooklyn, New York resident surpasses his 2012 accomplishments.
Gordon is also excited about his Trinidad 4x4 relays team this year and said “We just want to repeat what we did last year.” Last year at the London Olympics, Gordon took the bronze medal in the 400m in a personal best time of 44.52 seconds and then led his 4 x4 relay team of Deon Lendore, Jarrin Solomon, and Alleyne-Forte to the bronze medal in a national record time of 2.59.40. Both Lendore and Solomon had just competed impressive indoor seasons.
Social Media Access Violated
But perhaps Gordon’s performance during the latter part of the indoor season has to do more with his mental state of mind rather than physical. Gordon had his social media access stolen by individuals who were threatening to disclose personal information about him in an inopportune time in an attempt to discredit his character. This act was committed by individuals who were close to Gordon. This incident certainly had an impact on the athlete in his preparation for his races during the latter part of the indoor season. This was obviously disappointing to Gordon who has since moved on from this unfortunate episode.
