2021 Champs Day 1 Review

A total of sixteen finals were contested on day one of the 2021 ISSA Boy's and Girl's Championship. The Championship is being held from May 11-15 at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. There were six finals on the boy's side and ten finals on the girl's side.

Boys

Kingston College (KC) won the 2000m steeplechase, via Kirk Dawkins, in a smart time of 5:52.74 seconds. He got the better of Rivaldo Marshall of Calabar and Mathew Gordon of Jamaica College (JC), who stopped the clock in 5:53.74 and 6:06.80, respectively.

Akeel Hanchard of Kingston College won the Javelin open for boys with a respectable distance of 62.81m. Andre Raymond of St. Jago was second with a throw of 61.97m while Christopher Young of Edwin Allen secured third spot with 61.60m.

Even with mishaps in both the class 1 and class 3 boy's 110mH, Kingston College was still able to secure victories through Tajae Francis and Daniel Clarke, respectively. KC's ace hurdler in class 1, Vashaun Vaccianna was forced to pull out of the boy's class 1 110mH event.

In the class 1100mH, KC’s Tajae Francis posted 13.52 to win the gold medal, ahead of JC' Jaheim Stern, 13.78 and Radjae of Excelsior, a distant 15.25.

The Boy's class 2 110mH was won by Allem Pinto of STETHS, 13.55 ahead of Andre Harris of St. Jago, 13.57 and Amontae Wright of Kingston College, 13.70.

The Boy's Class 1 long Jump was won by St. Jago's Kavian Kerr who posted a respectable 7.81m on his final jump.

Girls

Ten finals were contested for the girl's competition on day 1 of the championship, with St. Jago and Hydel High each winning three. Edwin Allen won two finals while Wolmer’s and Holmwood Technical each won one event.

Shantae Foreman of St. Jago won the Class 1 high jump with a leap and personal best of 1.84m, ahead of Daniella Anglin (1.78m) of Herbert Morrison and Ackelia Smith (1.70m) of Edwin Allen.

Jamora Alves of St Jago took the girl’s Class 2 shot put title with a throw of 14.93m to finish ahead of the Edwin Allen dual of Rochele Solmon (14.49m) and Damali Williams (14.00m).

After a faulty start in the Girl's Class 3 80mH, Camoy Binger of St. Jago, 11.14, narrowly defeated Hydel's Jody Ann Daley (11.15). Binger’s teammate Briana Campbell was third in 11.24 second.

Other winners

Hydel’s Kerrica Hill and Sania Myers took the top spots in the Class 2 100mH with times of 13.39 and 13.92, respectively. Oneka Wilson of Hydel stop the clock at 13.60 seconds to win the girl’s Class 1 100mH ahead of rivals Marissa Simpson of Clarendon College, 13.70 and Patreece Clarke of Edwin Allen, 13.81.

Shemonique Hazle of Hydel won the Class 3 long jump title with a leap of 6.00, ahead of St. Jago’s Jade-Ann Dawkins (5.84m) and Excelsior’s Shelly-Ann Taylor (5.70m).

Edwin Allen also won two finals with Deijanae Bruce taking the Class 3 Girl's High Jump title with a leap of 1.68m ahead Wolmer’s Shanniqua Williams (1.68m) and St Jago’s Tori-Ann Anderson (1.65m). Shamoyea Morris and Dionjah Shaw took the two top spots in the Class 3 discus throw with throws of 38.54m and 37.77m respectively.

Holmwood's Samantha Pryce won the 2000m open steeplechase in 7:07.12, ahead of Edwin Allen's Snayae Gibson, 7:13.63 and St. Jago's Rushell Johnson, 7:17.70. Pryce winning time of 7:07.12 easily erased the mark of 7:01.07 set by Desreen Montaque back in 2012.

Tiana Marshall of Wolmer’s won the girl’s Class 4 70mH in 11.01 ahead of Hydel’s Tihanna Reid (11.06)
