Aggie Demetrius Pinder on Track and on Stage

Category:College       By O’Neil A. Reid    Posted on :5/14/2010

In his spare time, Texas A&M University’s junior Demetrius Pinder watches television and read books, including Shakespeare. The 21-year-old athlete and liberal arts/theater major is sharpening his craft not only in the classroom and on stage but also on the track. This Freeport, Bahamas native and aspiring actor has a season best 200m (21.18 secs.) and 400m (45.89) and is ready to write another chapter by helping his team win another Big 12 Conference title this weekend.

Big Ten Championship
Commenting on the conference championship at hand, the positive Demetrius Pinder said, “I am just coming off a minor injury but I am still mentally strong. I haven’t lost a lot. I kept up my cardio workout and now I am ready to compete. If I stay injury-free, then I am ok, because good things will happen.”

At last month Penn Relays, Demetrius and his Aggie teammates (Tran Howell, Gerald Phiri and Curtis Mitchell) captured the College Men’s 4x1 Championship of America race in a brisk 39.08 secs.

Reason for Improvement

Pinder notes that he has improved this season and has attributed the improvement to the coaching staff at Texas A&M: “The coaches talk to us about everything, and tell us what we need to change or adjust.”  At the end of March, Demetrius ran a personal and season best 45.89 in the 400m and believes he can go faster.  He’s also happy with his 200m 21.18 season opener.

The former Essex County College quarter-miler said that he gets lots of support from the Bahamian community and that his parents, Gary and Enamas Pinder, and siblings are his biggest supporters. “As long as my family supports me and I put God first, then I am alright.”

Demetrius, a Tabernacle Baptist Christian (Bahamas) graduate, has represented his country at three CARIFTA Games and two Junior Pan-American Games.
